About Us
The Hammond-Batts Family are descendants of Milton & Martha Hammond, and William & Sarah Batts of Hammond Texas. The two families were given land at emancipation in 1865 by Dr. Ben F Hammond. Doctor Hammond who moved from Alabama to Texas in 1853 built a plantation home, and later opened a depot, and post office. In 1869 he granted the Houston and Texas Central railroad right of-way through his land. After emancipation, and the declination of the railroad Dr Ben Hammond gave land to the Hammond-Batts slaves on his plantation. The two families later purchased a few acres at a time until they owned over 500 acres. The small community is still called Hammond Texas. In 1974 the two families established the Hammond-Batts Family reunion which is celebrated annually.
